Searching for a Melody

I didn’t want to pass the time alone.

I sought music, I sought rhythm, I sought a song….

I’ve been SEARCHING FOR A MELODY

Every hour of every day.

I’ve found some and I’ve loved a few–

Until dissonance got in the way.

I’d hesitate to modulate

If a note doesn’t fit in my range;

But some notes are quirky and some songs are strange.

I’ve been SEARCHING FOR A MELODY.

I guess I’ll have to search again….

I’ve been SEARCHING FOR A MELODY

A tune that moves me from the start:

I’ll sing the song, but if the tempo’s wrong,

It won’t make a groove in my heart.

It might be great to syncopate

If it all comes together at last:

A song for the future remembers the past.

I’ve been SEARCHING FOR A MELODY,

A perfect melody at last….

I’ve been SEARCHING FOR A MELODY

All the music I have known!

I played on cue a diatonic clue

And the melody finally came home!

It’s often wise to improvise

If the harmony’s simple and true.

A song like a rosebud that blooms with the dew:

I’ve been SEARCHING FOR A MELODY

And found my melody in you.

I’ve been SEARCHING FOR A MELODY

My perfect melody is you.
